My name is Betsy Grunch, but many people also know me as Dr. Grunch or @ladyspinedoc. I’m a board-certified neurosurgeon who has recently become an avid content creator. Social media has become a powerful way for me to share my healthcare journey with aspiring healthcare professionals, as well as to educate the general public about neurosurgery in an easy to understand way. I believe in patient-focused and compassionate care, and I’m proud to work on a team that wholeheartedly embraces this as well. When I’m not working, I enjoy spending time with my husband, two kids and two Vizslas. I also love working out, wake surfing, GA football, concerts and traveling!

I love being on the cutting edge of technology, particularly wearable tech.
What are the best 3 words to describe yourself?
Compassionate - As a surgeon, it’s in my nature to be compassionate. I often meet people during their most vulnerable moments and I take that responsibility seriously. Part of that is making sure they are comfortable and armed with the knowledge they need to make the next decision. Driven - I have always been goal-oriented; once I have set a goal, I will work tirelessly to achieve and exceed it. Fun-loving because I like to live life to its fullest, whether it’s at a football game, a concert, on the road or at the lake.
Please share a short story about an important challenge that you've overcome (in your life, hobby, or profession)
When I was in high school, my mother (a cop) was in a car accident on the job that left her a quadriplegic. This was a huge change in our life and we had to learn as a family how to move forward. For me, I took training to become a certified nursing assistant to help out. From then on, I knew I wanted to become a neurosurgeon so that I could help people like my mother. I am proud to say that I have achieved this dream and feel incredibly fortunate to be able to help others in similar situations to my mom.
