How ororo Heated Gear Helps Ocean Wise Protect Whales: An Interview with Gary Sutton

Marine conservation in British Columbia thrives thanks to researchers like Gary Sutton (@gary_j27). As part of Ocean Wise’s Whale Research Team, Gary works to protect whales and their habitats in challenging environments. ororo’s heated gear has become a game-changer for his fieldwork. In this interview, Gary shares insights into his work and how ororo supports his mission.

About Ocean Wise and Its Mission

Ocean Wise (@oceanwise) is a Vancouver-based non-profit dedicated to protecting and restoring our oceans. The Whale Research Team works to ensure safer waters for whales through long-term monitoring and innovative tools like the Whale Report Alert System, which helps ships avoid whales. Their current winter study in the Salish Sea focuses on understanding the diet and foraging behaviors of endangered resident killer whales to guide conservation efforts.

Gary Sutton: A Day in the Life

As a research technician and field operations lead, Gary operates Ocean Wise’s research vessel, “Skana.” His tasks include whale spotting, drone operations, DNA collection, and photo-identification. He also maintains the vessel and organizes research data—a demanding but rewarding role in marine conservation.

Importance of Whale Research

Whales play a critical role as environmental guardians, serving as indicator species for ocean health. By studying their behaviors, diet, and habitat, researchers gain insights into the broader ecosystem. Gary emphasizes, “Our success in protecting these iconic species reflects our ability to conserve marine environments.” Whale research helps guide conservation strategies that benefit not only marine life but the planet as a whole.

ororo’s Partnership with Gary Sutton

Gary’s introduction to ororo gear came during a summer research trip near the Alaskan border. A colleague let him try a heated vest, and he was impressed by its performance. Recognizing its potential for winter fieldwork, Gary reached out to ororo. “Their enthusiasm to support our mission was incredible,” he shared. The partnership has provided invaluable support, allowing Gary and his team to stay warm and focused in harsh conditions.

Impact of ororo Gear on Whale Research

ororo’s heated vests and gloves have transformed Gary’s fieldwork. During cold, foggy mornings, the gear allows him to remain on the flybridge for extended periods, improving visibility and whale spotting opportunities. “With the heated gear, we located a dozen humpback whales and K Pod, an endangered killer whale group,” Gary recalls. Staying warm means more time in the field, leading to better data collection and ultimately stronger conservation efforts.
