From Aspiring Golf Pro to Passionate Coach: How Meurig Found His Calling and the Gear to Keep Going

Born and raised in Wales, Meurig Morgan’s journey to becoming a respected junior golf coach in the U.S. is one fueled by passion, purpose, and determination. What began as a young boy’s dream to play professionally transformed into a mission to help others succeed in the game he loves. For Meurig, golf isn’t just a sport. It’s a way of life. Today, he’s using his knowledge and experience to inspire the next generation of golfers.

Along the way, he’s embraced tools like heated apparel that keep him warm without the bulk, so he can move freely, stay comfortable, and actually show his students the moves he's teaching.

From Dreaming to Play Professionally to Inspiring the Next Generation

Every great coach begins with a dream. Often, it’s the dream to play at the highest level. For Meurig Morgan, a dedicated golf instructor whose dream started at the age of 13, his goal was clear: to play professional golf. However, at one point in his career he realized he might not reach the top as a player. This realization didn't diminish his love for the game; instead, it redirected his passion toward another path within golf: coaching.

His journey into teaching was sparked by one of his own coaches, whose joy from helping others improve became a source of inspiration. Meurig dove into coaching philosophies, earned a degree in Kinesiology and Sport & Recreation Management, and eventually moved to the U.S. to further pursue the profession.

In San Jose, he met his mentor Gerald Haynes, whose approach was a turning point for Meurig. It deepened his appreciation for teaching and sparked a full commitment to coaching.

Building Dragon Golf Instruction

After relocating to Oregon, Meurig launched Dragon Golf Instruction, an academy that now supports more than 50 junior golfers.

With around 35 of his students now playing college golf, and 15 more soon to join them, his coaching philosophy has been successful. While some of his juniors dream of turning pro, many use golf as a pathway to education.

Simplicity + Feedback = Results

Over the years, Meurig's teaching style has evolved. While he once believed in a one-size-fits-all model, experience has taught him otherwise. Now, two principles guide his work:

  1. Every Golfer is Unique: Physical ability, learning style, and goals differ for each athlete. His coaching adjusts accordingly.
  2. Keep It Simple:  Clear communication and focusing on one concept at a time helps prevent overwhelm and builds confidence.

Another cornerstone of his instruction is feedback. Whether it’s a six-year-old beginner or a collegiate athlete, every student is encouraged to use feedback tools like alignment sticks, noodles, and even phone tripods. This makes a huge impact. “If you're not getting feedback, you're just guessing, and guessing wastes time,” Meurig says.

Staying Sharp in the Off-Season

Meurig encourages his students to keep practicing year-round, even when it’s cold. Thanks to affordable at-home golf tech, it’s easier than ever to stay in shape:

  • Practice at home with golf nets, mats, and launch monitors in the garage or backyard.
  • Use weighted clubs to build golf-specific strength.
  • Do indoor swing drills, even in small spaces like a hallway or living room.

“There’s nothing worse than not playing for six months and then expecting to play well in the spring.”

From Bulky Clothing to Full Focus: Why Heated Gear Matters

Teaching in Oregon means dealing with wide temperature swings, from 25°F to over 100°F. These fluctuations impact both practice conditions and performance. And teaching out of a garage with doors that open to the outdoors, he’d often wear up to 15 layers during long winter days. “I looked like I was going to Antarctica”, he jokes.

Meurig remembers the days of layering up with bulky clothing, trying to stay warm while still demonstrating proper mechanics. That changed during a winter lesson when a student’s dad showed up in a glowing heated jacket. “It looked like something out of Iron Man,” he laughs. “And I was instantly intrigued.”

That jacket turned out to be from ororo, and it changed the way Meurig approached winter coaching.

What started with one heated vest quickly turned into full gear: heated jacket, heated vest, heated pants, and hand warmers.

The One Part You Really Need to Keep Warm in Golf

In our interview, he also pointed out that the most critical part of the body in golf is your hands, as they're your only physical connection to the club.

Cold hands lead to a loss of feel and control. That’s where heated gear becomes a game-changer.  About 70% of his students now use heated hand warmers, often attaching them to their golf carts. They also rely heavily on heated vests and jackets, particularly in winter tournaments where tee times might be as early as 7 a.m. in 31°F weather.

“The key on the course is keeping your hands warm. If my hands are warm, the rest of my body stays warm too.”

Cold Legs No More: Why Heated Pants Were a Game-Changer

Meurig always struggled with cold legs during winter. So when ororo shared their new heated pants on Instagram, he didn’t hesitate to order. “The crazy thing is, I sometimes don’t even have to switch them on. The fleece lining is so warm I only turn them on when it drops to 30°F or below.”

Unlike bulky layers, he says these pants are warm and thin, letting him move freely while staying comfortable. “I wear them all the time now.”

Meurig’s Go-To Heated Gear for Golf

How Many ororo Items Does He Own

Laughing, he says he can’t even count them all, but estimates it’s around 25 items, including the ski heated jacket. Once his wife saw his, she had to order one too.

“My son’s got a couple, my daughter’s got a couple. I swear if you made cat stuff the cat would get it.”

How Heated Gear Changed the Way He Teaches

“It lets me teach. I can actually swing and demonstrate. When you’re wearing 15 layers, you just can’t move. You can’t stand on your feet for 10 to 12 hours a day in 37-degree weather without the right gear.”  He says that’s the beauty of ororo: warmth without restriction.

A Time It Really Made a Difference

“There was a junior qualifier tournament one April. Two weeks before, it was in the 70s°F, but the week of the event, it dropped to the 30s°F. The high was 42°F. I was shocked they even let us play. Under 35°F, the frost usually doesn’t lift from the green.”

He says the only reason they made it through, was the heated gear. “I wore the heated jacket, my student wore the heated vest, and we both had hand warmers. She ended up qualifying for the event. That’s how important staying warm is.”

Beyond Golf: A Family That Loves the Outdoors

Heated gear has made a difference in Meurig’s family life, since they love spending time outside:

“My family is outdoorsy. We ski, hike, hit the beach… We’re always doing something outside. Heated gear makes a huge difference. It lets us enjoy being outside a lot more, and that time together brings the family closer. That’s important to me.”

How Golf Shapes His Life

“Golf is who I am. I’ve been in it for over 25 years. It’s not just what I do. It’s part of my identity. I wouldn’t change it for the world.”

Something That Might Surprise You

  • Despite his love for sports and the outdoors, Meurig also has a passion for gardening.
  • He’s a big fan of retro video games and loves collecting them.

What Keeps Him Inspired

Being outdoors and spending time with his family are essential ways for him to unwind. He’s more of a mountain guy and hiking is one of his favorite ways to recharge. He finds peace in the mountains. It helps him reset and be prepared for whatever comes next.

Golf’s Greatest Lesson

“I’m not the most athletic person, so I had to work harder. Golf taught me work ethic.”

What he’s learned: “Nothing is given to you. You’ve got to work at it. You have to go out and get it. You have to discipline yourself.”
