From Training to Recovery: Staying Warm Around Winter Sports

After years of practicing your favorite winter sport, you might think you’ve gotten used to cold temperatures… right?

Or maybe not.

The truth is, many people love winter sports but don’t love the cold. And while layering up seems like the obvious solution, too many layers can restrict movement (which is the last thing you want when performance matters).

At the same time, even if you do enjoy chilly temperatures, keeping your body warm, especially your core, is essential for two major reasons:

  1. Warm muscles improve mobility and range of motion.
  2. Proper warmth helps prevent injuries.

That’s why warm-ups matter. And it’s also why heated gear has become a game-changer for winter athletes across skiing, snowboarding, hockey, ice skating, and curling, among others.

Over the years, we’ve spoken to athletes and customers who say their ororo heated gear doesn’t just make them more comfortable; it also helps them perform better.

Depending on your sport, you’ll decide to go for a heated vest or heated jacket. Heated vests are a great option if you need lots of mobility, but we also have our heated ski jackets, which are waterproof and are a great option for being in the snow.

Let’s break it down.

Warm-Up: Start Strong

Before you step onto the ice or hit the slopes, your body needs proper preparation.

Sport-specific warm-up exercises are essential, but keeping your muscles warm before and during that warm-up is just as important. Heated gear can support this process by helping maintain muscle temperature, allowing your body to ease into movement more efficiently and get fully ready for performance.

While Performing: Mobility + Controlled Warmth

Winter sports demand movement. Whether you’re going down the slopes, sweeping the ice in curling, or performing a figure skating routine, your gear needs to move with you. For many athletes, a heated vest is a great option, and for others, heated gloves, pants, and/or jackets are a must.

Let’s see what people are saying about the gear they use for different sports.

Skiing & Snowboarding

St. Moritz Women's Heated Snow Jacket (Final Sale)

Our Heated Ski & Snow Collection is built for serious conditions; it’s waterproof, insulated, and adjustable.

“I skied two days in freezing, windy, snowy conditions and they were great… The heating on the front thighs ends up heating the whole leg. The low setting was plenty. My legs were warm, dry, and comfortable throughout the cold day.” Brad A., Monte Rosa Men’s Heated Snow Pants

For hands, heated mittens and gloves are a must in extreme temperatures.

“The gloves worked like a charm. My hands were warm all day… The gloves are a game changer.” Patty C., Amsterdam Heated Mittens 2.0

For some snowboarders, the River Ridge Women’s 3-in-1 Heated Jacket has become a favorite.

I use this jacket for snowboarding, and it's a total game-changer! The best part is being able to turn the heating on while sitting on the chairlift to stay warm. The vibrating feedback on the ororo button is really useful, especially while wearing gloves. Also LOVE the colour!” Allison, River Ridge Women's 3-in-1 Heated Jacket with Fleece Liner

Even athletes from the U.S. Snowboard Racing Team rely on ororo. Team member Lexi Bullis has told us how ororo has become part of her routine and of the team. Her heated jacket is very helpful, especially when standing at the top of the hill before a race. After performing, the team also turns on their Classic Heated Vest to maintain warmth.

Ice Skating: Precision in the Cold

St. Moritz Women's Heated Snow Jacket (Final Sale)

Training on the ice means constant exposure to cold surfaces and frigid air.

I bought this to warm up for ice skating, and I love it! I am 5'1" and 120lbs., and I bought a small. It fits close to the body, just how I wanted it, but not too tight. Love it.” Jenny B., Women's Heated Fleece Vest

Professional skater Mark Hanretty explains it perfectly:

ororo has made work immeasurably more comfortable than life without ororo on the ice. And because I feel better physically, I also feel better mentally and emotionally. So I actually think I give a better version of myself.”

And that’s the key: warmth affects not just your muscles, but your mindset too.

Mark owns various heated items, including heated vests, heated pants, and a heated jacket.

Curling: Focus Without Distraction

Curling demands precision, balance, and mental clarity. Being cold is a distraction no athlete needs.

Women's Classic Heated Vest - Black

I got this vest after seeing several people at my curling club with heated vests. The multiple heat modes make it easily adjustable for when the ice is extra cold and when I warm up during the game. All in all, this is the perfect addition to my curling gear!” Claire,  Claire L., Women's Classic Heated Vest

Before ororo, Drew Picard layered heavily, which interfered with mobility. Now, he performs better because he can focus on the game instead of the cold.

And Stephen Emt, an important American wheelchair curler, initially worried that a vest wouldn’t keep his arms warm. This is what he told us: “Keeping the core warm got my arms warm… It’s one less thing to think about. I can crank it up or down. Not worrying about it allows me to get into my game mode quicker.”

That freedom of movement,  without bulky layers, makes all the difference to them.

After Practice: Recovery Matters

When your training session ends, your body is still vulnerable to rapid temperature drops. Turning your heat back on after activity helps prevent stiffness and strain.

Stretching post-practice is essential. And for additional support, targeted heated recovery gear can make a huge difference.
